The Head of the SZRU Mykola Malomuzh marks as positive the strengthening of the role of the Intelligence Service in the sphere of protection of national interests
The Head of the Foreign Intelligence Service of Ukraine colonel-general Mykola Malomuzh marks as positive the strengthening of the role of the Intelligence Service in the sphere of protection of national interests. He stated about it in his exclusive comment for UNIAN.
"Today there are introduced the new ideology of the Intelligence Service activity, fundamentally new standards, values and approaches to the organization of work", - M. Malomuzh stressed. He added that it yielded certain results and allowed to focus efforts on priority areas of the SZRU activity – conducting intelligence activities in political, economical, military and technical, scientific and technical, information and ecological spheres.
In particular M. Malomuzh said that the SZRU took part in counterterrorism, combating international organized crime, drug trafficking, as well as weapon trafficking and its production process, and illicit migration. For more effective activity in these directions there was specially created this year a new unit – the Department for combating international terrorism and organized crime. M. Malomuzh reported that as a result of measures taken to disclose international terrorist organization structures the Foreign Intelligence Service of Ukraine has repressed the intentions of the leaders of separate international terrorist groups to expand their influence on the processes in Ukraine. "There was prevented a number of extremist demonstrations in Ukraine and abroad, in regard to diplomatic institutes and citizens of Ukraine as well. The information obtained by the Ukrainian Intelligence Service was used for identification of persons involved in some terrorist attacks abroad", - said M. Malomuzh.
He mentioned that in order to fullfill these and other tasks more effectively the Foreign Intelligence Service of Ukraine had maintained constant bilateral cooperation with 111 special services of 67 countries of the world, and had worked out the mechanism of interaction and information exchange.
Furthermore, M.Malomuzh underlined that the promotion by special means of state economic foreign programs realization, inncluding the foreign contracts, implementation of modern technologies, foreign investments involvement and prevention of economic losses for the state plays an important role in the Intelligence Service’s activity. According to the SZRU’s Head, the economic effect from this activity estimates hundreds of millions hryvnas.
At the same time M.Malomyzh stressed that nowadays a high value is set to the fact that it is impossible to use the Intelligence Service for purposes, not prescribed by Ukrainian law, and to creation of conditions, that are necessary for carrying out an effective democratic control over its activity.
UNIAN information. Today, on the 1st of December, is the 15th anniversary of the Ukrainian Intelligence Service creation. In December 1991 the formation of the General Headquarters of Intelligence within the National Security Service of Ukraine was documentarily fixed. Later the General Headquarters of Intelligence was reorganized into the Intelligence Department of the Security Service of Ukraine. Since October 14, 2005 the SZRU had been an independent state body. On December 1, 2005 the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine approved the Law "On the Foreign Intelligence Service of Ukraine".
